Limerick is Ireland's third largest city and is on the banks of the River Shannon in the West of Ireland. St John's Cathedral in the City Centre is famous for having the tallest church spire in Ireland. Thomond Park, just over the river is the home of Munster Rugby.

The Vikings founded Limerick in 922 AD. It was an obvious place to build a town because it was an island between the Shannon and the Abbey River and so was easily defended. Limerick soon became a thriving little town. In the 16th century Limerick remained a busy little town. However, the 17th century was a turbulent one for Ireland and Limerick underwent four sieges which decimated the city and its population. In the 20th century Limerick remained an agricultural town. The main industry was food processing. However in the late 20th century tourism became a major industry in Limerick. Other industries were engineering and technology.  In the late 20th century and early 21st century a great deal of money was spent refurbishing areas of Limerick and restoring its old buildings. This process continues today and it amounts to a renaissance of the city.

Limerick is home to some of Ireland’s finest museums. Visitors to Limerick city flock to either the Limerick Museum, The Hunt Museum or Limerick City Gallery and sometimes all three in one day! Just over the River Shannon from the city centre is Thomond Park. This stadium is home to a number of sports teams with Munster Rugby being the most well known. The stadium also hosts live music concerts throughout the summer months from some of the biggest artists as they tour across the Republic of Ireland. Those looking for some green space to relax can find the People’s Park a pleasant space to be. Visitors looking for some of the freshest food and product in the South of Ireland visit the Milk Market to find all their needs with many well known retailers based at the other side of the city around Harvey’s Quay and Henry Street.
